Penang Trip with Bday Gang

Monday, January 28, 2013

wow..been holding this post for almost a week already...
was actually waiting for ShuYing to send me all the pictures...
cannot start blogging before i get all my pictures right..:p

this post is going to be superb lengthy and wordy...
with loads of no filter or edited pictures...
so bare with what you are about to read and view..:)

was on a trip to Penang Island with my beloved Bday Gang once again...
i was really very looking forward for this trip...
even weeks before when we were planning for it...
because all the members could make it for this trip except Chien...
then two days before this trip...
i got to know from Airen that she had to back out from this vacation...
because of her FYP meeting with her supervisor...
was very disappointed at first because i felt not fun anymore without her around...
but thank god the overall trip was still very happening and fun..:)

so this was a three days two nights trip...
from the 18th January 2013 until 20th January 2013...
few of us departed from different places and finally meet up in Penang...
Esther and me were the only two girls departing from Kuantan...
we boarded the Konsortium Bus on the 17th January at 9pm...
Marcus was supposed to travel to Penang with us both as well...
but he could not make it back to Kuantan after his finals...
because he had something to do in his uni...
it was pretty scary to travel without a guy around...
plus you are travelling eight hours at night..><
and it was indeed a great torture to sleep in such a cold environment...
i barely sleep because it was just too cold for me...

18 January 2013

and after travelling for about 8 and a half hour...
we finally stepped our feet on Penang Island...
we got down at Sg. Nibong Bus Station at around 5.30am...
and Marcus and ShuYing came and picked us up from there...
they sent us back to Grace's hostel inside USM to rest...
lucky us to have one extra bed in the room as Grace's roommate just checked out from the hostel...
i was sleeping on the same bed with Grace...
and Esther conquered the other whole bed...
managed to get some sleeps until around 8.45am...
showered and changed and then helped Grace to carry her stuffs to the storeroom...
then we walked out to accompanied her to withdraw money and buy bus tickets...
Marcus and ShuYing came and picked us up...
and we headed out to have breakfast...
'dim sum' for breakfast at the Maxim Restaurant...
*no picture taken here*
we were not able to go on with our tentative that Grace planned earlier...
because HongCheet will only join us at night once he finish his last paper...

the planner did a pretty good job with her homeworks...
*thumbs up to Grace*

so the first half day was just to do random stuffs...
we went to look for our homestay first after having breakfast...
it took us quite some time to find...
because the owner of the homestay owns like 3-4 homestays in that area..:o
we managed to find the owner and paid our rentals...
and got a key for one of the room we booked...
the owner only gave us one key because check in time was supposed to be 6pm...
and she was not sure if the previous renters already leave the rooms we have booked...
and the cleaners need to clean the rooms before we can check in...
so she gave us one key to put our luggage...
this is the front view of our homestay...

we then visited the Snake Temple at Sungai Kluang, Bayan Lepas...
Grace got a shocked when i told her that the snakes in the temple are not caged but set freely...
but Marcus got so excited and immediately agreed to go..:p

visited this temple before years back when i was on a vacation with my family...
and i remembered that there were so many snakes in the temple...
but there was not much snakes left when i visited this time...

Marcus thought this snake is fake one that he intended to touch it...
but i was like 'NO!!'...
because there was a sign saying that we are not allowed to touch the snake...
no idea if the snakes are real...
but it just depends on your beliefs right..:)

but this is definitely a real one..><
so freaky because it was staring straight to the camera...

bought a fan also because the weather was so so hot...
Esther..Grace..and me...

we hanged inside the temple for a while only...
because there was nothing much to see also...
and before we leave the temple...
we managed to get a taxi driver to help us snap a group photo at the entrance..:)

we had tea time after that...
another hard time to look for the cafe...
because Grace never been to this place before...
she only heard from a friend of hers about it...
and she got to know from this friend that the layered cakes there are very good...
when we finally found the cafe when we accidentally passed by it...
Grace and Esther were like 'there!!! there!!! twelve cups!!!'...
Marcus almost banged his car..:p
we have to park our car inside a building mainly doing parking service...
but it was very troublesome because...
almost all the parking space at the lower level of the building are all reserved..-_-
we ended up parking our car at level 6..-_-

so tea at a cafe called The Twelve Cups...

solo pictures for the first day of trip...
start with me..

Grace..

Marcus..

ShuYing..

Esther..
so hard to ask her snap a solo picture...
she kept saying that she will look fat if take alone..-_-
but i think i snapped it so nicely...

we ordered two slices of cakes to share among ourselves...
hokkaido chocolate mille crepe...

hokkaido milk mille crepe...

Marcus ordered this mozzarella cheese pizza...

the boss treated us this for free...
and it was really very good...
i never like coffee...
but this combination of coffee with vanilla is so perfect..:)
but it has to be eaten together because taking the coffee alone tasted very bitter...
thanks the lady boss so much..:)

next stop was the Fort Cornwallis at Georgetown...
*see..we really got nothing to do that we went into historical place..-_-*

cost each of us RM2 for the entrance fee...
so we make sure we took as much photos as possible...
here are some of the photos...
with Francis Light statue..:p

the lighthouse...

lighthouse and canons...

another canon shot which i like it a lot..:)

look at the silly couple...
ShuYing insisted to be the male instead of a female..:D

then we walked over to a food court beside the fort...
and we tried out the famous coconut shake and 'mee sotong' there...

the coconut shake is indeed very good...
and it tasted extra good during the hot weather...
it is not expensive at all...
only RM2.50 for a cup...

and this was the so called 'mee sotong'...
i do not really like it because it is very spicy..><

we received a call around 5.30pm from the car rental owner...
to request us to collect the car earlier...
so once we done with our second round tea...
we went back to USM to collect the rest of the luggage of Grace...
then went to fetch Keong...
and headed to collect our car...
the car collection lasted for quite some time because there were so much procedures to settle...
payments and also few times checking on the car...
almost slept in the car while waiting for them..><

we then drive back in two cars to our homestay...
and we finally checked into our rooms...
we rested and showered before going out for dinner again...

room for esther and me..:)

one thing i do not like about the homestay was that...
there were a few unknowns also staying under the same roof with us...
we had to share bathrooms and toilets with them...
but it is a homestay...
cannot expect they have toilet in each room..><
it made showering became very troublesome...
because we must constantly come out and check if there is anyone using the bathrooms...

we came out again around 8.30pm for dinner...
we had 'hakka noodles' in a restaurant...
*which i forget what is the name already*
HongCheet called when we reached the restaurant...
saying that he already reached...
so ShuYing and Marcus drove to the bus station to pick him up...
the rest of us had our dinner first while waiting for them...

'hakka noodles' with minced pork toppings...

after dinner we visited the Kuan Yin Floating Temple...
it is located deep inside a village...
which i feel it would be hard for tourists to locate it..-_-
and the moment we reached the temple...
our first reaction was 'that's all??'..-_-
it is just a very nothing special temple...
and it is not floating at all...
we only hanged there for about 20 minutes..-_-
just some pictures and we left...

then we went to have supper at a superb famous burgers of Marshall's...
but it was FULLHOUSE..:o
plus there were still so many people queuing outside waiting...
so we decided to pack back to homestay...

we only ordered two burgers...
the bull burger which is beef...

and pork burger...

all of us rested and that is all for the first day of our trip...

19 January 2013

second day of our trip...
this day was a very very tiring day...
because it was also a non-stop-walking-under-the-sun day...

got up pretty early to wash up...
we had light breakfast at our first stop...
*no idea where..-_-*

take a look at my beloved gang...
fresh looks early in the morning..:)

ShuYing..

Marcus..

Keong..

Grace..

HongCheet..

Esther..

and me..
had my hair all tied up because i knew it is going to be a sweaty day..
had slight sunburn on the upper side of my chests and hands...
*if you could see from this picture*

yam cake...
*not the famous one*

famous no1...
i forgot what is the name they called already...
but it tasted almost like 'lo bak gou'...

famous no2...
'chee cheong fun' where they eat along with 'hako'...
it was okie for me...
but i could not take too much at one time...

then we headed for second round breakfast...
*no idea where was it again*
this time we had toast breads instead...
the Toh Soon Cafe...

probably the oldest breakfast in this trip...
the shop is just one very tiny one at one corner of a building...
no doubt it was all packed with people...
some of them even need to share tables with others...

the specialty of these toast breads...
the traditional way of toasting using charcoals i guess..:)

Grace..Keong..HongCheet..

Esther..ShuYing..Marcus..and me..

there are altogether four types of breads they serve...
so we ordered all the four types...
this is the coffee flavour toasts...

with 'kaya'...

no idea what is the different between this one and the top one...
but they served we just eat..:p
this is also toast with 'kaya'...

actually this is also with 'kaya' and peanut butter??..-_-

then it was hunting for Ernes Zachas's paintings time...
which also means walking under the hot sun...
we parked our cars somewhere in the middle of all the paintings...
and we walked and looked for the paintings...
not exactly like searching every corner of the streets for them...
because the Grace know where those paintings are located...
so we saved so much troubles to dig each of them out..:)

our first painting was the one with swings...
got myself a solo picture..:)

the loved ones..

the second painting is at the street just right beside the Step by Step Lane...
managed to ask a stranger to snap a group photo for us...
but too bad it looks a little dark...

the third painting is located at the jetty...
we had to walk into the jetty passing into a village...
got to know that this village is the one where Ice Kacang Puppy Love was screened...
i guess this place is one of the tourist spot?
because i saw plenty of tourists there...

we stopped at a house where the owner had one side of his house painted so colourful...
i guess it was part of the owner's idea to attract people to take pictures...
*i am just guessing..:p*
but it definitely attracted us to snap pictures at this wall of the house..:p
so pretty right...

finally reached the end of the village...
and the painting is painted at one of the house at the jetty...
it was very sad to see the painting had spoiled...
the paints seem to be peeling out from the wood...

a picture of me on the jetty...
like the view..:)

next painting we visited was the one with bicycle...
the only picture we had for this painting...
because it is painted on the  pretty busy street with cars keep coming in...
it was very hard to snap one picture here...
so we decided to only have one group photo instead of us snapping one by one...

the fifth painting would be the old man painting...
too bad that the colours are fading already...
i barely get to see the painting properly until Grace told me that it is an old man...

spotted this old man teaching origami...
his origami did mentioned before on Facebook...

the sixth painting...

the seventh painting...
i assume that the dog was already drawn on the wall...
 before Ernes paints the picture...
so Ernes got inspired by the ugly dog and he drew a little boy dragging it...
by simply adding a collar on the dog and a chain..:p

the guys...

the eight painting...
the motorcycle...
the boys...

and the girls...

the photo booth painting was supposed to be here...
but it was removed by the government...
because it was right beside a road...
the government thinks that it is very dangerous for tourists to take pictures here...
so they removed it..-_-
*stupid act from the government..simply ruin people's masterpiece*

the ninth painting was the kungfu girl...
looks creepy to me..-_-

then we headed for a pit stop at this restaurant called Kheng Pin Cafe...

ordered their so called famous chicken rice to try...
each of us had one plate of the chicken rice...
nothing special actually...
just that the chicken is extra soft and tender...

the last painting after lunch...
the trishaw...
so big that i look so tiny..:p

another lunch after we done with painting searching...
walked for around 5 minutes to reach...
Grace said the cendol is very famous...
i guess it is really famous because there were so many people queuing for it...
and indeed it was really not bad...
*still nothing beat the cendol i had at Nyonya Makko in Malacca*

the ABC is a little bit too ordinary...

finally get to eat laksa!!!
but i feel the fish taste is not enough...
still prefer the one at Ayer Itam..:p

HongCheet was craving for 'char kuey teow'...
Grace and Keong went to pack this back for him...
Grace said Penang's food are all very salty...
so she finds this very nice to eat...
but a little bit too tasteless for me...

went to the Youth Park after that...
the park is almost similar to the Taman Gelora here...
but nicer of course...

guess what these two guys said when they were playing this...
'we're practicing sex'..-_-

us at the park...

nothing much to do in the evening...
because we were supposed to wait for the sky to get darker...
to get up to Penang Hill for the Penang view...
so we ended up at Asia Cafe to rest and chill...
stayed there for about three hours...

spot the boy watching badminton with all uncles??..:p

the reason we were at Asia Cafe was also because...
we want to have the famous tom yam there...
a very different version of tom yam...
taste more to sweet and salty rather than sour...
and the texture is very thick...
not bad but i guess it is too much for me...

around 6.45pm we were ready to go up the hill...
it only cost each of us RM4 for the entrance fee...

i was pretty freaked out when i was in the train...
i dislike the feeling of moving up...
and watching myself getting higher and higher from the ground...
was grabbing ShuYing's hand all the while..-_-

the view from the top of the hill is very beautiful..:)
but the person who helped us to snap this group photo seemed to have shivery hands...

we were supposed to go Kek Lok Si to see the Kuan Yin statue in lights...
but when we got there it was already closed...
so we decided to head for 'kue jap'...
*means porridge or rice boiled with different organs of pig*
but it was all sold out...
so we headed for 'loh mee'...

we ordered one big bowl for three persons...
but the quantity was so shocking..:o
it was so a lot that it can feed all of us...
no doubt it is very very tasty..:)
*thumbs up*

and lastly to end the day...
we packed two huge slices of cakes from Chinahouse...
*when i said huge..i really mean HUGE*
bought their specialty which is the carrot cake...

and moist chocolate...
both cakes are really very nice..:)
and very very filling...

dozed off once i got up my bed..@@

20 January 2013

it was the last day of our trip...
our outing for this day was kind of short...
because we need to get back to homestay to wash up...
before some of us boarding the bus back to Kuantan...

so we got up early like the day before...
headed straight to Ayer Itam for breakfast...
after everyone was done with their washing and dressing ups..:)
was supposed to have the curry mee there...
the so called famous Lim's Sisters Curry Mee...
but too bad it was not opened..:(
so we ended up just ordered whatever food at the market...
and sat at a round table and ate together...

apam balik...
too thick..no like...

'yao char kuai'...

one extremely not nice 'chee cheong fun'...

the not famous curry mee...
where they serve it with pig blood cubes...
ShuYing..Esther..and HongCheet ordered one bowl for each of them...
but the two girls ended up giving all the pig blood to HongCheet...
coz he loves it..><
*eeewwww*

then we headed straight up to the top of Kek Lok Si...
had toilet breaks first before exploring the temple..:p
*marcus and me only actually*
resting while waiting for the two of us to do our business...

big satisfaction after coming out from the toilet..:p

i made two wishes on the wishing tree there...
the orange ribbon: to be together forever...
for my beloved Bday Gang of course..
the pink ribbon: going and coming safely...
wished for baby's safety..

a picture with the Kuan Yin Statue...

and a photo with the Penang view in the morning...
a little too sunny i guess...

guess what??
my sandals spoiled when we were about to leave the temple...
*this was the second time i had my shoes spoiled during trip..-_-*
i had to drag my feet all the way to the place where we parked our cars...
we drove down first back to the market at the bottom of Kek Lok Si...
and i had to simply get a pair of slippers from the shops there...
which cost me RM12..-_-

off we headed to Straits Quay Mall...
and we tried out the layered cakes at the Humble Beginnings...
*we had cakes for three consecutive days*

we ordered four slices of cakes to share...
from left to right...
chocolate velvet..cookies and cream..coffee bliss..and royal milk tea...
no doubt the layered cakes here are much better than Nadeje and Twelve Cups...
the cakes are very very creamy...
i like it a lot..:)

then we walked out to the private jetty there...
but just for a while because the sun was killing us...

then back inside the mall to take picture with Charlie Brown...
take 1...

take 2...

we were supposed to have 'yu tao mai' for lunch...
but it was all sold out when we got there..><
so we ended up turning another big round to eat the famous 'char kuey teow'...
which i find it not bad at all..:)
but it is a little too pricey...
RM8 for small plate of 'char kuey teow'..-_-

this is the without spicy...
because HongCheet cannot eat spicy...

the spicy one...
this is better..:p

our last pit stop for the trip was at the Pik Nik...
we spent the rest of the evening there chatting and chilling...
i ordered their specialty waffles with salmon egg and ham...
never like waffles...
so i only took a bit of the waffles and distribute the rest to the gang..:p
major sunburn in this picture..:(

drew this on their stacko..:p

i just love the environment there...
nice place to chill and relax...
everyone deserved a solo picture because the backgrounds are very beautiful..:)

Emily..

Grace..

Keong..

HongCheet..

ShuYing..

Marcus..
this is over-relaxing..:p

Esther..

spotted our picture at Pik Nik on Facebook...

we left Pik Nik around 5pm...
Marcus sent ShuYing back to hostel...
and went return our car back...
then six of us went back to homestay together in Marcus's car...
rested and showered...

then around 8pm we checked out from our homestay...
and we had dinner at a food court...
Keong took over Marcus's car...
and the couple sent HongCheet..Marcus..Esther..and me...
 to Sg Nibong Bus Station...
we boarded the 10pm Konsortium Bus back Kuantan...

enjoyed this trip so much...
see you guys again in Kuantan..:)
